"Death and life are in the power of the tongue" (Prov. 18:21).
If this is so, then it would seem we'd want to say all things life-affirming, right? Yet, we often do more complaining and lamenting than praising and speaking of positive things.
People often tell me to be careful with what I say because "You'll speak things into existence."
Well, I want to speak things into existence; I want to speak all the wonderful things that God has done for me and all the things he will do for me. We should want to do this, right? NEED to do this if our words have power.
If we talk about all the great things the Lord has done for us, then more great things will occur.
Peter and John, in Acts 4, refused to stop saying all the wonderful things that the Lord had done for them and was arrested for it. But that didn't deter them; they continued speaking of the Lord, his wonderful blessings and goodness.
18 So they called them and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. 19 But Peter and John answered and said to them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge. 20 For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.” 21 So when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way of punishing them, because of the people, since they all glorified God for what had been done (Acts 4:18-21).
Opposition will always occur, but it will be the strength of our convictions -- what we believe, how we act out this belief, and how we speak of this belief -- that will keep us close to the Lord and keep him showing us his mercy, grace, and lovingkindness.
